Common ground is the last thing I thought I would find with this California girl. We were raised on opposite ends of the country. She's up to her eyes in Jeffery Campbell and I can't get enough of Top Sider. Turns out though, cold pizza, awkward company, and a lack of cell phone service can serve as excellent means for bonding, and we found enough common ground to cover the whole damn Salt Lake Valley. Twice.
Neither of us intended to wind up in Utah. I grew up in the bubble known as New England. I'm American, and I'm as WASPY as they come. I went to Prep School for Godsakes. This past September, I spent three months on a boat, sailing through the Med and across the Atlantic. All I dream of is Circumnavigation. That and custom Jacks. Being landlocked really wasn't for me. The last place I thought I would find myself was the Wasatch Mountain Range.
And coming in hot from Orange County, we have the Ballet Major. She's struggled with early onset seniortitis, having been mentally checked out of school since the ninth grade . It didn't matter though, not when your legs could go where Sydney's could. Her passion for dance lead her to the Houston Ballet Academy. Her love for Blue Bell Ice Cream, Rudys BBQ, and Tex-Mex kept her there for two years. Seven thousand odd pique turns later, Syd decided to give it the old college try. Literally.
Sydney and I found each other at orientation. As previously stated, it was a painful day. That's putting it kindly. There is someone, somewhere, working in the admissions department at the University of Utah, with cruel intentions. We're constantly being asked how we met. Most people assume we've been in each others lives for a substantial period of time. That assumption is incorrect. I may or may not have creepily invited Sydney to my car to listen to music until the hold was lifted on our registration.
Fast forward six months and the East Coast Transplant and the Golden Coast Ballerina live together. This is our blog about living on the East Bench of the Salt Lake Valley. About our polar opposite styles. About our adventures in Utah. About life, and about everything in-between.
